【Aim】Pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in Japan. To improve the prognosis of pancreatic cancer, multidisciplinary approach to the disease is indispensable. In this presentation, we’ll introduce our cooperation system for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. 【Method & Result】We organized a team called “pancreatic cancer unit” consisting of endoscopists, oncologists, radiologists, and surgeons in 2007. The treatment course for the patients with pancreatic cancer are discussed and determined in the pancreatic cancer unit conference. First, We discuss whether the patients are operable or not. Next, the patients are hospitalized and pathological diagnoses are made by EUS-FNA or brushing cytology performed by endoscopists, and if necessary, metallic stents are inserted into the bile duct to relief obstructive jaundice. For the patients with inoperable tumor, chemotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy are provided depends on the cases. The number of patients with pancreatic cancer who received chemotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy in our institution between April 2007 and March 2012 were 507 or 74, respectively. The patients receive induction of chemotherapy by oncologists with hospitalization following the endoscopic procedures. The treatment is followed by outpatient chemotherapy that is provided by oncologists in collaboration with endoscopists. Endoscopists and oncologists constantly communicate each other in case of oncology emergency including stent troubles.【Conclusion】Cooperation between endoscopists and oncologists is important in the practice of pancreatic cancer. |
