Humans are superorganisms with two integrated genomesthe genetically inherited human genome(23000 genes) and the environmentally acquired human mierobiome (over 1 million genes). The twogenomes must work in harmonious integrati’on to maintain health. Bioactive substances (antioxidantsvi-tamins or various toxins) produced by particular members of gut microbiota may get into bloodstream viaenterohepatic circulation or impaired gut barrier tQ affect host immunity and metabolism. Diet plays adominating role in shaping the structure of the gut microbiome to modulate host health. Obesity and re-lated metabolic diseases develop because of low-gradesystemic and chronic inflarnmation provoked by in-creased antigen load from a diet disrupted gutmicrobiota. Changes of host health induced by biotic or abi-otic perturbations such as a viral infection or carcinogen exposure m. ay also disrupt gut microbiota whichin return can fumher deteriorate host health. Due to the tight integration of gut microbiota into humanglobal metabolismmolecular profling of urine metabolites and gut microbiome can provide an ideal win-dow for quantitative assessment and monitoring of health at the whole-body level with the advantage ofmeasuring human health based on /the results of interactions between the two genomes and the environ-ment rather than just host genomic sequences. Large-scalelongitudinal cohort studies in conjunction withthese whole-body systems approaches will generate pre-disease biomarkers with predictive power. Thesebiomarkers can facilitate preventive health management of populations with rapidly changing diseaserisks by way of re-engineering the imbalanced gut microbiome with specifically designed drugs/diets. |
