Background and Study Aims: Recently, the advance of Video Capsule Endoscopy (PillCam SB, Given Imaging Ltd. VCE) has enabled to observe all of the small intestine. VCE was approved in Japan in April 2007. The main indication for use of the PillCam SB is obscure GI bleeding (OGIB). The SB2plus enabled to be used all the patients by whom a small intestinal disease is suspected in July 2012. From October 2007, Center of Video Capsule Endoscopy was started in this institution. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical utility of VCE.Patients and Methods: Between October 2007 and February 2013, 1060 consecutive patients (633 M and 427 F) who underwent VCE were enrolled. Results: The average patient age was 64±16, Hb level (g/dl) was 8.4±2.9 (3.0-16.9). Indications for VCE were OGIB (71.6% of cases), anemia (7.2%), tumors (6.9%) abdominal pain and diarrhea (6.0%), others (11.7%). VCE examination was normal without any finding in 33.5% of patients. 21 (2.0%) of 1060 patients were completed VCE examination in stomach. 705 (66.5%) of 1060 patients with small intestinal lesions were detected. Detected lesions with 705 patients were following; Ulcer or erosions 329 (31%), Vascular abnormalities 191 (18%), Active bleeding 127 (12%), Tumors 96 (9.1%), Others 46 (4.4%). Conclusions: VCE is safe and effective in diagnosis of small intestinal diseases. |
