Background and aims: In patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, intractable abdominal pain is a common symptom. Celiac plexus neurolysis is performed for pain relief of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. We analyzed efficacy of endoscopic ultrasound- (EUS-) guided neurolysis for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer in our hospital retrospectively. Methods: Between August 2008 and October 2012, 11 patients with advanced pancreatic cancer received EUS-guided neurolysis (EUS-guided celiac ganglia neurolysis (EUS-CGN) 7 cases and EUS-guided celiac plexus neurolysis (EUS-CPN) 4 cases). EUS-CGN and EUS-CPN were performed with a convex echoendoscope (GIF-UCT 240). Patients scored their pain according to visual analogue scale (VAS) and were interviewed one week and 2 months after the procedure. Results: EUS-CGN and EUS-CPN brought pain decreasing for all patients one week after the procedure. 6 patients (54.5%) reduced opiate or NSAIDs requirements. 5 patients reported recurring their pain 2 months after the procedure. Treatment-related side effects included severe pain immediately postprocedure in 1 patient. Conclusion: EUS-CGN and EUS-CPN were effective for pain relief in patients with pancreatic cancer without serious complications. |
