The idea of the video capsule surfaced in 1982 as response to a limitation of the tube endoscope that was unable to easily image the SB had to be answered by a new approach. At the beginning, the available technology was not available and doubts were raised on the validity of the concept. By 1993 new technologies surfaced, the CMOS imager, ASIC transmitter and the white LED. The next step was the establishing of Given Imaging as a startup, and intensive R/D effort was launched(1997). By 2000 the first capsule was ingested, on 2002 manufacturing and marketing was in full swing. Today, we count more than 2 million capsules that were ingested, helped to save lives and improve quality of life for many. In the future, the capsule technology will be advanced in the following directions:maneuverable capsule, non-imaging capsule incorporating biochemical sensing and biopsy capsule. |
