抄録 For generations the leaders of our profession have been the beneficiaries of mentors who have paved the way for their successes. The most important lesson learned from this history is that great mentors are framed by the serial successes of those whom they mentor. Success need not be limited to that achieved in a professional career. Sometimes advice on how to be a better person can be more important than career guidance, for the ultimate goal of a career must be measured on its impact in making the world a better place in which to live.
What are the critical elements of mentorship? Appreciating talent where it resides and allowing it to bloom by providing it time, counsel and real resources when required - setting high standards and expectations and being honest about performance against objectives - opening doors of opportunity whenever possible - caring what happens long beyond the time of daily contact - doing one’s best to serve as a role model. Mentorship above all is selfless, lifelong and extends beyond geographic proximity.
The virtuous cycle of good mentors in turn breeding the next generation of good mentors is the secret to nurturing inspired and effective leaders for the future.
