抄録 | Success in academic medicine is no simple matter. It requires hard work, focus, rigor, integrity, mentoring, and in a pervasive way, networking and collaboration. In today’s competitive environment, it is a daunting challenge to succeed, not to mention doing it alone. Establishing a network of collaborators and close colleagues is the key to making cutting-edge scientific discoveries and rising to the top among your peers. The US and Japanese GI/Liver scientific communities are like-minded people, especially among the leaders, who have had the extraordinary vision of“the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”, and created a culture of brotherhood and cooperation. This vision has emboldened a long and extensive history of close collaborations and scientific exchanges, leading to major advances in the field. In my own research area of viral hepatitis and liver diseases, I have been a fortunate beneficiary of this culture and spirit. I will provide various examples by drawing from my personal experiences. Going forward, how can we sustain and improve on this storied relationship? The senior leadership of both scientific communities needs to work collectively and collaboratively to develop innovative programs for joint conferences, fellowship training, scientific collaborations, cross-mentorship, and cooperative funding opportunities. In celebrating the 100th anniversary of the JSGE, I look forward to another 100 years of this“beautiful friendship.” |
