1)Background/aims Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori)infection has been well known etiologies causing acute and chronic gastritis, chronic atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcers as well as gastric cancer. Supported with our previous publications showing anti-H. pylori, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative actions of each component of Kimchi gradients, we investigated whether chronic ingestion of specially formulated Korean kimchi, so called cancer preventive kimchi, can prevent H. pylori-induced gastric carcinogenesis in mouse model. 2)Methods We prepared 4 types Kimchi formula and investigated each biological effects on H. pylori-infected AGS cells. 6-week-old C57BL/6 were inoculated with H. pylori(Sidney strain 1)and each formula of kimchi were administered in drinking waters mixed with condensed, extracted, and liquid forms for 24 and 36weeks, respectively. After killing, in addition to gross and pathologic evaluations, the expressions of inflammatory enzymes or cytokines were analyzed by Western blot analysis. H&E and F4/80 staining were also performed to observe tissue damages induced by H. pylori. 3)Results and Discussion H. pylori infection induced the erythematous and nodular changes, mucosal ulcerative and erosive lesions, cobblestoned mucosa as well as thinning of gastric mucosa at 24weeks, but special formulated kimchi significantly ameliorated these mucosal damages. On 36 weeks, scattered mass forming lesions were noted in H. pylori-infected mice, whereas no tumorous lesion was observed in kimchi administered group. On molecular changes, the expressions of inflammatory mediators, cytokines, and apoptosis in accordant with pathologic finding were significantly attenuated in kimchi administered group and significantly lowered levels of oxidative stress and deranged regeneration were imposed with kimchi. 4)Conclusion As much as anti-microbial approach, non-antimicrobial way, for instance, ingesting cancer preventive kimchi, might be ideal way to prevent H. pylori-associated chronic atrophic gastritis as well as carcinogenesis.
